Doyle has been busy every spare moment this week hand carving two new Pre Contact Woodland Period Conch Whelk Pendant Gorgets, one is the Medicine Wheel Spider, the other a Medicine Wheel Star Pendant.
These are recreations of actual Sea Shell Pendant Gorgets that were popular among Pre Contact Native American Peoples more the 500 years ago primarily from the South eastern Part of the American Continent.

You can see some of the hard work that goes into these conch pendant shell blanks that Doyle cut himself from shells we collected from Florida beaches this last Winter.
After roughing out the basic shape, he draws the design on the shell using a compass and flexible ruler.

As you can see, Doyle uses a high carbon steel engraver and he has to carve the design over and over until he gets the depth and texture he needs for the pattern to emerge.
These images were very important to Primitive Peoples, they often represented Clan identification and status in the community.
It takes anywhere from 10 to 24 continuous hours to create one of these wonders, and from what he's done in the past, it's darn well worth it!
Once he's done he will hand it over to me and I will turn it into a Pendant either with a crochet, beaded or leather cord, depending on what the Pendant tells me what it wants to be.
I hope this glimpse into our little workshop helps you understand how we create our Sea Shell jewelry, not only beautiful in their own right, but Historically accurate as well!

Everything Old Is New Again! Large Hand Carved Whelk Conch Shell Pendant

I kept thinking to myself that something was missing with this piece and didn't have a clue as to how I was going to suspend it to best show off its virtues.
After much thought, I decided to use crochet as a frame and bring more earthiness to the shell itself. The result was that the Back side of this piece became just as important and lovely as the front!
Being the Crochet was carefully done, it is entirely reversible with no knots showing!
The Moral Is: Never give up on a piece that stymies you!

We Recreate These Timeless Treasures to Bring Back to Life the Unique and Beautiful Adornments worn by Ancient Peoples and normally only seen in Natural History Museums.
This is a Based on a Mississippian Era Pendant found in the Ancient Temple Mounds of Sauratown, North Carolina. The picture of the original is included. Only a Person of Great Importance would have owned such a piece and it was believed to have great powers it bestowed on the Person who wore it. The symbols of the Bird Head and Snake Head combined were to identify the Tribal Affiliation and Status of the wearer.
The Pendant Measures 2.25" or 55mm is 18" long including the Copper Toggle Clasp. The conch Shell Beads Average 20mm, The Baroque Pearls 12-15mm and the MOP Stick beads are 20mm long.

Chevron Rosette Red White Blue Trade Bead Necklace w Gift Box

Trade Bead Necklace! This Modern "Mirror Ball" Necklace was purchased
from a World Renowned Bead Trader several years ago at a premium price
because of its rarity and totally unique design.The Large Pendant Bead Artist is unknown, but it is known that he only made Three of these Fantastic Beads and I have one!
It took me years to figure out how to string this Pendant to its best advantage, but finally I found some modern Italian Chevron Trade Beads to compliment the design of the Larger Bead.
The necklace is 22" long including the Large Bead which is 1.75" or 45mm wide! the rest of the Chevron Beads are 1.825" or 28mm.

I actually just sit with a pile of beads and let them tell me what they want to be, so I was frankly quite pleased when this necklace appeared out of my imagination!
